With all the news about car recalls, toy recalls, drug recalls, and more, it’s easy to either panic or become complacent about how to protect your family from unseen risks in our everyday lives. Many of us are doing home renovations or buying a new home with materials we don’t know much about. And what about our children, at daycare, school, playground, or college? My guest this week is the Honorable Nancy Steorts, former Chairman of the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. She served also as the first Consumer Advisor to the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture. Ms. Steorts is the nation’s foremost authority on safety, especially in the home, and is author of three highly acclaimed books: Your Home Safe Home, Safe Living in a Dangerous World, and Safety and You. Ms. Steorts will share with us her best advice on how to be a safety-aware consumer of products for your home and family. She also has some fascinating stories to share about the products that fill our modern lives.

Hon. Nancy Harvey Steorts is former Chairman of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and served in safety related roles in five presidential administrations. Her first book, Safety and You, received worldwide distribution, and her second, Safe Living in a Dangerous World, is recognized as “the most comprehensive book on safety issues.” Her third book, Your Home Safe Home is considered one of the most outstanding books on home safety issues. She was acclaimed for having executed the largest and most effective consumer product safety recall in US history, with 50 million pieces of jewelry containing lead. She has been named, “One of the Best Public Servants” by the Gallagher Report and earned the prestigious Margaret Dana Award from the American Society of Testing Materials. Seeking the implementation at the local level of her efforts, she became a top producing realtor in the DC and Virginia area and has been a leader in realtor education, green efforts, and women’s issues.

Since the terrorist attacks on New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania in 2001, Be the Star You Are!® has always quietly responded with Operation Disaster Relief. It began on 9/11 with Operation Ground Hero when volunteers across the nation helped collect and distribute 57 pallets of books, CD’s, videos, games and more to the families of the victims, continued with Operation Hurricane Relief (for Katrina and Rita), Operation Fire Relief (major Southern California Fires), and now Operation Tornado Relief.

We have packed, logged, shipped, and coordinated distributions for tsunamis, volcanoes, explosions, and earthquakes affording the survivors a glimpse of relief, entertainment, and offering the hope for rebirth.

As of today, Operation Tornado Disaster Reliefhas shipped $47,000 worth of resources to the schools and clinics destroyed in Joplin’s tornadoes.  We will continue to help until all the children have a new book and the hospitals have healed patients with optimism.

Something inside really clicked – keeping my word with myself allows me to easily step into my brilliance in every moment. It’s so simple, I couldn’t see it before! In the last hour since listening to the show I have accomplished an amazing array of half-finished jobs and feel invigorated even though I have a head-cold. I was talking myself out of doing any work today because I’m feeling a bit sick, but I realized I actually feel pretty good and can get a lot done without running myself into the ground.
